A new survey from BettorOff reveals that almost 50% of US sports enthusiasts intend to wager on the forthcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Surprisingly, 18% of these individuals will be placing wagers on soccer for the first time ever. Even more striking, a full 75% of those new to soccer betting are considering continuing even after the World Cup excitement subsides.
This research polled 1,500 self-identified adult sports fans across 21 US states and the District of Columbia, all locations where online sports wagering is permitted.
Some other notable findings from the survey: 68% of these fans plan to limit their wagers to under $200 for the duration of the World Cup, which, as a reminder, takes place from November 20th to December 18th.
More than 25% of those surveyed indicated they intend to place bets on every single match. That’s commitment! Conversely, 51% will concentrate their wagers on specific national teams, with 13% solely interested in betting on matches featuring the US team.
Here’s the clincher – despite the tournament being held in Qatar, with a substantial time difference from the US, a strong 79% of these sports fans are prepared to place bets even if they are unable to watch the matches live.
For context, FIFA approximated that an astounding $146 billion was wagered globally on the 2018 World Cup. At that time, only three US states (Nevada, Delaware, and New Jersey) had legalized sports betting, and the majority of it was conducted in person.
“We’re witnessing a fascinating convergence of the excitement surrounding the World Cup and the expanding ability to place bets on it,” remarked Alex Dubin, the CEO and founder of BettorOff.
The soaring surge in American enthusiasm for both professional soccer and digital wagering on athletic events suggests that this year’s global football tournament will be a pivotal juncture for aficionados and bettors nationwide.”
