France Cracks Down on Match-Fixing with Overhauled Sports Betting List

Frances gaming watchdog, the ANJ, is poised to overhaul the landscape of sports wagering. They are revamping their catalog of sanctioned athletic contests, and this revised roster, taking effect on March 1, 2024, introduces significant alterations.

Since 2010, France has maintained strict control over sports betting, permitting it solely for designated events and wager types. This inventory of approved events, known as the “sports event list,” undergoes periodic updates, but the ANJ acknowledges that it had become somewhat convoluted – lacking clarity and consistency.

The latest revision, determined last December, has a clear objective: to combat match-fixing directly. They aim to achieve this by prohibiting wagers that do not necessitate genuine sports expertise. Essentially, if a bet appears overly susceptible to manipulation, it is being eliminated. They are also curtailing betting activities on specific events.

One of the most substantial consequences of this updated list is the sheer volume of events and competitions that are no longer eligible for wagering. A staggering 179 events have been removed! Some were eliminated due to their discontinuation, while others were deemed too vulnerable to manipulation – consider lower-tier football leagues as an example.

Others, such as the Armenian Premier League, were excluded because they were not considered sufficiently significant or popular to merit inclusion.

Following this reduction, the list now encompasses 772 events. The ANJ appears to be conveying a clear message: they aspire for French sports betting to revolve around genuine enthusiasm and knowledge, rather than solely easy profits and dubious practices.

The modifications indicate that the number of wagering choices remains unchanged, despite adjustments to the language for improved clarity. In essence, rather than enumerating each individual wager, they have been consolidated into broader classifications.

Positive developments for enthusiasts of tennis and basketball! Certain previous wagering restrictions and maximums have been eased. As an illustration, it is now permissible to place a wager on a basketball athlete to achieve a score exceeding 20 points, a possibility previously unavailable.

This revision follows a recent assessment conducted by the ANJ (France’s gaming regulatory authority) concerning forthcoming gambling promotions. Their objective is to ensure transparency and equitable treatment for all participants.
